“With plenty to gaze upon at The Preserve, all of the architecture needs to be subordinate to the land, and this home is no exception.”

—Robert Kaufman, Western Art & Architecture

SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE ONE
Carmel Valley, CA

Located at the point where rolling hills meet meadows of native grassland, this house was designed to sit sensitively in its terrain. Commissioned as a California home for a London-based couple, and set within a 19-acre parcel of Central Coast landscape, the house is loosely based on traditional California ranch house and Argentine estancias. Nestled among oak trees and into the contours of the site, the house feels quite at home in its surroundings.

The compound is defined by low-slung wings that form a central entry courtyard, while providing intimate settings from the otherwise large landscape with its expansive porch and terraces. Hospitality and relaxation are the focus for the interiors, with large gathering spaces, and two wings housing six guest bedrooms and a master suite. Generous roof overhangs provide shelter from the southern and western sun. The material palette is simple and practical, in keeping with ranch house traditions.
